Boston Summer Activities for Nannies and Kids
Summer is not as far off as you might think. Here are some ideas you can plan for during the snowy indoor days. To make the most of summertime with your nanny charges, check out some of the many kid-friendly activities Boston has to offer.
1) Check out an exhibit at the Boston Children’s Museum
Boston Children’s Museum is one of the oldest and largest children’s museums in the world. This museum has incredible exhibits that are hands-on, fun, and exciting. The interactive Kid Power exhibit inspires kids to be active and healthy and Raceways is an educational exhibit where kids can explore the laws of motion. The Art Lab encourages kids to express their ideas and creativity using different tools. Adults and children can enjoy all the exhibits for $22 entry, with free entry for members and infants under 12 months.
2) Visit the New England Aquarium
This popular waterfront attraction has four levels of water galleries, tanks, and exhibits. For just $25 (children’s admission), kids can observe and explore aquatic animals at New England Aquarium. The aquarium even has special meet-and-greet programs with animals like green turtles and harbor seals. Plus, on-site Simons Theatre shows eye-popping movies about aquatic life and the natural world.
3) Catch an outdoor movie for free
Take a break from watching Netflix at home on the couch. Bring a blanket, chairs, popcorn, and some drinks to one of many spots in Boston that hosts free outdoor movies. Christopher Columbus Park hosts movies every Sunday at dusk throughout the summer. Every Friday night starting in June, the Boston Harbor Hotel shows movies for younger and older kids (some of them are PG-13, so screen options before going!). Find a park and movie showing near you.
4) Go stargazing at the Museum of Science
Head to the Museum of Science, featuring hands-on exhibits including movement zones, a planetairum, and the magnificent dinosaur exhibit. The museum periodically runs free-entry sessions for Boston residents, and also creates online sessions for those rainy days when you can’t leave the house.
5) Cool off at Boston Common Frog Pond
Boston Common Frog Pond lies at the heart of the oldest public park in the United States, Boston Common. Let the kids splash around the Spray Pool while you relax in the shade. They can also enjoy the carousel for $4 per ride, or burn off some of that energy at the nearby playground. Boston Common also has several monuments and art pieces, like the Make Way for Ducklings Sculpture across Charles Street, or the Soldiers and Sailors Monument south of the pond.
6) Walk through history on the Freedom Trail
The Freedom Trail is a popular tourist attraction, but if your kiddos have never experienced it, why not try it this summer? The trail stretches for 2.5 miles through historic downtown Boston, the North End, Charlestown, and Boston Common. If you have little ones with you who may tire out quickly, you can easily walk parts of the trail and learn about its history… then go for ice cream. It’s a treat for nanny and child!
7) Soak up the sun at the beach
Boston has plenty of family-friendly beaches within an hour of downtown. Close to downtown is Carson Beach in South Boston and Orient Heights Beach in East Boston. If you’re able to get a little further away from the city center, Mound Street Beach in Quincy has pretty picnic spots and playground facilities. Or there’s Nahant Beach northeast of the city, a gorgeous beach with plenty of room to spread out on the sand.
