Our founder, Lydia Thibodeau, left a successful career as a futures and commodities broker to launch Chicago Collegiate Nannies in 2015. After a few successful years in business, she spread her wings and moved to Boston; a city she had always admired due to its rich history, proximity to nature, and vibrant international culture.
Lydia quickly recognized despite the number of respected universities in Boston, the struggles local families faced to find professional, educated nannies to support their families. Boston Collegiate Nannies was created, combining the integrity and time-tested processes she had used in Chicago with Boston-based families and their unique challenges specifically in mind.
By 2021, not only were both agencies thriving, but families in other regions of the country continued to reach out with similar priorities and values for their nanny searches. Both businesses now operate together in Boston, Chicago and beyond under the name Sommet Nannies.
What makes Boston a great place to grow up?
Boston is a vibrant city filled with history, culture, and education. As a child, it is an incredible place to experience the richness of American life, yet still with relatively easy access to so many places on the East Coast and even Europe. You can be in New York City within five hours, and skiing in the mountains of New Hampshire or swimming in New England lakes only two or three hours from Boston.
Within the city of Boston itself, there are an abundance of cultural resources, as well as libraries, playgrounds, and outdoor spaces. A typical day as a nanny in Boston might involve a trip to the Boston Aquarium, a walk along Long Wharf, a visit to the Children’s Library at Boston Public Library, and end up in Martin’s Park. Or it might involve a trip to one of Boston’s many beautiful beaches, a visit to Boston Children’s Museum, and for older kids, perhaps even participation in summer STEM camps from the likes of Harvard or MIT. Boston is a true center of learning, the opportunities for children to take advantage of them even before they are in school are huge.
