4 Easy and Fun Holiday Craft Ideas for Boston Families
Too cold to play in the snow outside? Stay in and get your craft on with the kids! Here are some easy and fun holiday craft ideas that you and your kiddos will love.
1) Make ooey, gooey holiday slime
A fun sensory activity that kids of all ages will love! Remember to wash your hands before and after making your slime. You can put wax paper down on your work surface to protect it from food dye, too.
Materials You’ll Need
One 6 oz bottle of Elmer’s glue
Bowl
Food dye (optional)
½ teaspoon baking soda
1 ½ tablespoon of contact lens solution (must include boric acid)
Wax paper
Sequins, glitter, or confetti
Instructions
Add glue to the bowl. If you want your slime to be a holiday-inspired color, like Christmas tree green or snowflake light blue, add a couple drops of your chosen food dye to the glue.
Add ½ tsp of baking soda and mix well. For stretchier slime, add 1-2 tablespoons of water.
If you’re using festive sequins, glitter, or confetti, add it now and stir.
Add 1 ½ tbsp of contact solution slowly to the bowl, mixing and kneading as you go along.
Transfer the slime to a flat surface and continue to mix and knead until it reaches a slime consistency.
Have fun! Your slime can be stored in an airtight container for a few days.
Try these holiday-inspired color combinations for your slime:
Clear slime with red, white, and green sequins
White slime with gold star confetti
Red slime with silver glitter
Blue slime with snowflake confetti
Red and white slime wrapped together to make a candy cane
2) Make a paper roll menorah
What better way to celebrate Hanukkah than to create your own menorah! No need for candles — just reuse what you have around the house!
Materials Needed:
10 toilet paper tubes, or 10 pieces of construction paper to roll into “candles” (1 extra piece will be used for the shamash, the tallest candle in the center of the menorah)
Glue
Scissors (safety scissors work well!)
Orange or yellow construction paper
Optional: Glitter
Optional: Cotton balls/fake snow for menorah base
Instructions
Draw a candle on the first tube or roll of construction paper.
Cut out the candle shape on the tube/roll of paper (leaving the bottom of the roll intact).
Repeat for the 9 remaining tubes/rolls of paper.
Trace the flame shape onto construction paper, and cut out 9 flames.
Glue flames to 9 tubes/rolls of paper.
Add a piece of tube/paper to the middle candle (shamash) so that it will be higher than the rest.
Add glitter to the flames/candles if you want!
Glue the base of each candle to a piece of paper or cotton snow
3) Create holiday wreaths of all sizes
If you or your nanny family have a bunch of extra mason jar lids not being used, here’s a great craft idea that’ll turn them into cute holiday wreaths!
Materials You’ll Need
Twine or rope in the color and materials of your choice
Scissors
Hot glue (optional)
Ribbon
Pom poms, sequins, and stick on gems
Instructions
Remove the lid from the jar. Take a length of twine or rope and begin wrapping it around the mason jar band to create a wreath shape.
Tie a knot to hold the twine or rope in place, OR use a hot glue gun to glue the end of the twine to the band. Cut off any excess.
Add a loop of ribbon to hang the wreath.
Get creative with decorations! Add ribbon bows, stick on gems in holiday colors and shapes, or festive pom poms to your wreath.
Hang your ornaments from your Christmas tree, or string them together and hang them on a mantle or on the wall!
4) Make easy ornaments (that smell yummy, too)
We love this quick and easy craft project that creates little Christmas trees out of cinnamon sticks and ribbon. They look cute and smell wonderful.
Materials You’ll Need
Long cinnamon sticks
Assorted ribbon in your choice of color and design
Scissors
Twine or rope
Hot glue gun
Instructions
Cut 6-7 pieces of ribbon around 10 or 11 inches long. Tie each piece around the cinnamon stick.
Trim the lengths of each ribbon so that they form a Christmas tree shape. The ribbon pieces should go from short to long, top to bottom. You can cut your ribbon into various lengths before tying them to the stick if you prefer (it’s just harder to tie shorter ribbons!).
Cut pieces of twine or rope to make your ornament hangers. Glue each end to the top of your cinnamon stick.
Let glue dry completely before hanging.
