Nannies: How To Prepare For An Interview

Working as a professional nanny means that you interview with multiple families to find the best fit for you. Like any interview, you want to make sure that you are presenting yourself in the best light possible. Here are some pointers to ensure you never walk into a nanny interview unprepared again!

Nanny interview step 1: greet the parents with a smile!

As a nanny, it is so important to present yourself in a way that is warm and friendly. That presentation starts with their first impression of you. It will make a world of difference if you walk into their home or join the zoom call with a smile on your face. It sounds simple but it sets you up for success in the rest of the interview.

Nanny interview step 2: be punctual

Being on time, or even a few minutes early, will also set you up for a successful interview. Being punctual and reliable are very important qualities for a nanny to possess. Being late to an interview has the potential to ruin your chances before you have even had the opportunity to speak with the family.

Nanny interview step 3: dress appropriately

Whether interviewing with an agency or a family, it is important to present yourself in a professional way. It is also important to remember that you may be interacting with the children. It is important to find clothing that is practical but professional.

Nanny interview step 4: be prepared for questions

It is important to be able to answer questions thoroughly so the family or agency is able to really get to know you. Make sure you have prepared some answers to common questions asked in a professional nanny interview, like the ones listed here. Try your best not to answer questions with a simple yes or no.

Nanny interview step 5: interact with the children

If you are in an interview where the children are in attendance, be sure to interact with them. Be sure to ask them questions, such as their name or age. Showing your love of children and desire to build a relationship with them will be valuable for the parents to see.

Nanny interview step 6: ask questions!

One of the things parents love to see in an interview is someone who has come prepared with questions to ask. Showing a natural curiosity for their family shows that you want to work as a team in raising their children. How do you currently use discipline in your household? Are there any tasks in the household you would like me to help with? Coming prepared with a list of questions is key!

Good luck in your interviews!
