7 St. Patrick's Day Treats and Activities for Kids in Chicago
St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner, which means the city of Chicago will transform into different shades of green to celebrate the festive holiday. From the world-famous river dyeing to the dozens of parades and festivals, it’s a fun time to be in Chicago and take part in decades-old traditions.
While it may seem like all the St. Patrick’s Day fun is left to the adults, we’ve found plenty of ways nannies in Chicago can get kids involved, too! Here, we’re sharing some of our favorite holiday-themed treats and activities in Chicago that everyone can do together.
1) Green Pancakes and Eggs
Start the day off right and bright with green pancakes and eggs from Kitchen Frau! This recipe uses no artificial colors and you can make the pancakes gluten- and dairy-free if you want. The best part? The green coloring comes from spinach, helping these fun foods pack a healthy punch.
2) Clover Rice Krispy Treats
Rice Krispy Treats are always a favorite, but these clovers take them to a whole new level. The green coating has a very fitting peppermint flavor, and the sprinkles add a festive flair. These are also perfect for getting the little ones involved, as they can have some (sticky) fun while mixing the marshmallows and cereal by hand.
3) Green Mac and Cheese
As much as we wish we could celebrate the entire holiday with treats, the kiddos will likely need to eat something other than sugar. This mac and cheese is the answer. Not only is it green and delicious, but it’s healthier than most mac and cheese because it contains vegetables! It’s sure to be a win for the kids (and their parents).
4) Shamrock Mint Hot Chocolate
If you and the kids spend time outside in the (still) chilly Chicago weather, this shamrock mint hot chocolate is the perfect way to warm up. While this treat is great for any cold day, the whipped cream and green sprinkles on top make it an exciting drink to cheers with on St. Patrick’s Day.
5) Children’s Shamrock Shuffle
The annual Shamrock Shuffle is an enormous running event that celebrates the start of the running season on St. Patrick’s Day. There’s no need for children to miss out on the fun with the Kid’s Course, where children aged 2–7 can run, climb, and crawl over playful obstacles on the South Lawn.
6) Chicago River Dyeing
Since 1962, Chicagoans and others from around the country and world have gathered at the Chicago River for St. Patrick’s Day. Boats travel on the water to release 45 pounds of vegetable dye that magically turns from orange to green, kicking off celebrations for the city. Snag the best views from the east side of the Michigan Ave., the west side of Columbus Dr., or Upper and Lower Wacker Dr. between Michigan Ave. and Columbus Dr.
7) St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations
Whether you nanny in the city or the suburbs, there are tons of activities happening the day before and on St. Patrick’s Day, which falls on a Tuesday. From songs and crafts to leprechaun hunts, fun events are happening all over the city for you and the kids to take part in.
