No matter how much experience you have as a nanny, household manager, or any job for that matter, starting a new role provides an entirely different dynamic to navigate. Here at Sommet Nannies, we’ve placed hundreds of college-educated, amazing nannies who have had a successful transition to their new roles! Here are some tips for starting your new role.

Ask questions!

Each family is different and so are their dynamics, house roles, and expectations. Spend the first week sorting out any expectations that were not outlined in your contract. What can you do to be a support for their family? Where does your trash go so I’m able to take it out while the babies sleep? Families have their hands full and it will mean the world to them if you go the extra mile to help them out. Working as an in-home care provider is a very intimate and special role, be sure to go the extra mile this first week so the family feels that you are making an effort. Having open communication is so important in the first week and even moving forward, so don’t be afraid to ask questions!

Plan a fun group activity!

Here are Sommet, we place nannies in lots of major cities such as Chicago, Boston, and Washington D.C.. All of these cities offer amazing playgrounds, museums, and engaging group activities. Depending on the age of your children and where you are located, take some initiative and offer a fun outing. This first week could also be a good time to come prepared with some sensory play, outdoor activity, or craft.

Share but don’t overshare!

In this industry, boundaries can get blurred quite quickly, so use your best judgement and remember that at the end of the day you are an employee. At the beginning of a new nanny role, shy away from oversharing about a significant other/politics/religion/or weekend plans. Disclosing too much about your personal life can make a parent question your commitment to their family and how long you plan to remain in the position.

You know what they say about assuming!

Don’t make any assumptions about the new family or how their home operates. What worked for your last nanny family might not work in your new role. It also may take some time to learn how their home operates so be patient! Learn how your new family communicates and be sure to check in to make sure they feel good with how things are going. Make it a great first week—you’ve got this!
